I hesitate to post this because it's an ad, but when people have asked where certain characters in The Indestructibles came from, Kate's the easiest to explain--I've known dancers who put up with injuries that would have leveled athletes in other sports. Ballplayers ain't got nothing on a ballet dancer when it comes to what they fight through to perform. Hence the toughest and most determined character in the book is a ballet deancer turned vigilante. And this commercial does a heck of a job demonstrating that.
Here's a link with the one minute Under Armour ad. Whether or not you're into the clothing line, it's still really wonderful to see an athletics company promote ballet as part of the pantheon of sports requiring, athleticism, strength, skill, and grace. As an aside, I rarely say what the characters look like in my head because I don't want to take anything away from the readers' imaginations, but I have to admit... I think Misty Copeland would be a great casting choice for Kate in an Indestructibles movie, wouldn't she?

I’ve only heard about the indestructible lately when a friend of mine recommended the book to me. He’s this big superhero fanatic with the geeky shirts and a big pile of comic books that he collects. And although I love comics, I’m more of a super villain person myself. There was something about madness and the tragedy that pulled me into it. When he started mentioning the characters to me, I was hooked on Doc Silence and Kate. See, dancing in general isn’t something that’s easy to master. When they feel pain during a performance, you can’t really show it to everyone. So I love the dynamic of Kate, she plays this lone wolf of a character and solidifies her role as a strong female character.

So glad you're enjoying the characters--Kate's one of my favorites to write for exactly the reasons you say. Dancers have to power through the performance and never show pain or weakness, which is why I thought a ballet dancer superhero would make sense. She's so much fun to write as someone who hides her pain while saving the world.
